How to Style Cushions on a Lounge Step-by-Step

When it comes to making your living room feel fresh and inviting, cushions are your best friend. Whether you’re staging a home for sale or simply refreshing your space, learning how to style cushions on a lounge makes a big impact with very little effort.

Here’s how to get that styled-but-effortless look we use in our professional home staging jobs:

  1. Start with a Base of Two Large Cushions

Place one large cushion on each end of the lounge. This gives your setup structure and balance. Choose a neutral or solid colour that matches your lounge.

  1. Layer in Medium Cushions for Style

Next, add two medium-sized cushions in front of the larger ones. This is where you can play with patterns, textures, or seasonal colours to add interest.

  1. Add a Statement Cushion in the Centre

Place a smaller or bold-patterned cushion in the middle. This creates a focal point and pulls the look together.

  1. Keep It Odd (In a Good Way)

Odd numbers work best! Aim for 3 or 5 cushions depending on your lounge size. Odd groupings feel more relaxed and visually pleasing.

  1. Don’t Forget to Fluff and Chop

Give your cushions a quick fluff, then gently chop the tops with your hand for that soft "V" shape — a small trick that adds a luxe, finished look.

Bonus Tip:

  • Stick to a colour palette that matches your home’s styling, especially if you're staging to sell. Too many colours can look messy and distract buyers.

  • Consider adding another accent piece, like an oversized knit throw blanket.
